Abstract
1,255,968. Granulating. GLAVERBEL. Dec.24, 1968 [Jan. 4, 1968], No.61437/68. Heading C7X. [Also in Division C1] A liquid or pasty material, e.g. molten glass, slag or scoria is formed into particles by feeding it through the central shaft 22 to a rotating disc 20. The particles flung from the disc by centrifugal force are subjected during their trajectory to the action of one or more transverse jets of gas (which may be heated) either whilst traversing the chamber 24 or after they have passed out of the chamber via the peripheral opening 32. In the embodiment shown, hot gas is fed into the chamber via the pipe 34 to maintain a sufficiently high temperature (other means, e.g. radiant heaters may be used) and a stream of cold air 48 from pipe 42 carries away hot gas from the region outside the chamber. Further outside the chamber, the particles are subjected to an ascending current of air 56 from conduit 58 which increases the length of the trajectory path 54, and to decelerating jets from conduits 59. Further gas currents 78 and 80 serve to deflect the particles into the collecting chamber 40. Within and just outside the chamber 24 are additional gas conduits 106, 108, 112, 114, 120, 122, 124, 126, 66, 92, 94 and 98 from which jets of gas 108, 110, 114, 116, 118, 128, 130, 132, 134, 64, 96, 90 and 100 may issue. Adjustment of the gas velocities of these jets may be employed to vary the nature of the particles produced.
