Abstract

Refinements introduced into an apparatus for melting glassy, inorganic raw materials with a high melting temperature, comprising: (a) a generally cylindrical metal body lined with refractory material and having conical discharge and discharge ends, (b) means for rotating said cylindrical body about its longitudinal axis, (c) means for feeding said raw materials in granular or crushed form to the feed end of said rotating metal body, (d) heating means for producing heat to said materials raw materials, and (e) means for cooling the outer surface of said rotating body, whose improvements include: (1) cooling means capable of controlling the temperature gradient through the refractory-lined metal walls of said rotating body, comprising a plurality of cooling fluid discharge ports that communicate with steps provided d e valve for cooling fluid, said discharge ports being able to impinge a plurality of individually controlled amounts of cooling fluid streams on said rotating metal body, said streams being therefore capable of causing a layer of melt solidified covering the refractory lining of said metal body and also causing a plurality of annular ribs of solidified melt to form on said solidified layer, and (2) heating means capable of transferring a high intensity of heat, while reducing the speed of the gas, through said rotating metal body, comprising a fuel-oxygen burner, cooled by water.
