Abstract
Improvements introduced in a process for melting glassy inorganic raw materials, with a high melting temperature, comprising the operations of: (a) feeding said raw materials in granular form or crushed by one end of a generally cylindrical rotating chamber, (b) melting said raw materials with heat from a flame and (c) discharging the melt from the handsome end of said chamber, whose improvements include: (1) producing said flame by burning a fuel with a gas containing 50-100 % oxygen, thus providing a high heat intensity to said raw materials, (2) rotating said chamber at a speed of approximately 0.5-30 rpm, thereby causing a layer of said melt to cover the interior walls of said chamber, and (3) discharge a plurality of streams of cooling fluid onto the outer walls of said rotating chamber in order to maintain u n temperature gradient across the walls of said chamber such that a part of said melt solidifies to form a continuous protective layer inside said chamber.
