Abstract

725,815. Rotary furnaces. LURGI GES. FUR CHEMIE UND HUTTENWESEN. Feb. 5, 1953 [Feb. 8, 1952], No. 3314/53. Class 51 (2). In a rotary melting furnace, the firing zone 1 is lined with a water-cooled coil 7 spaced 5 cms. from the inner surface of the furnace shell and embedded in a temporary lining of refractory cement about 10 cms. thick, being connected by pipes 6 to a stationary stuffing box 5 provided with water supply and discharge pipes, Fig. 3 (not shown). Charge outlets 9 are arranged in the conical wall 8 which tapers towards the stuffing box. As the charge melts it attacks and dissolves the temporary lining and itself freezes over the cooling coils to form a refractory lining during the operation of the furnace. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the furnace shell widens in a steep cone and then tapers slightly towards the preheating zone 3, so that the melting zone has a contour approximately parallel to that of the burner flame.
