Abstract

1350639 Melting glass KOMBINAT TECHNISCHES GLAS ILMENAU VEB 7 June 1971 19156/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] In a glass melting furnace, the innermost lining is formed by a layer of molten metal held in equilibrium by centrifugal action. The lining is rotated electromagnetically or mechanically in a stationary furnace or, as shown, by rotation of the furnace. An inlet 4 and outlet 5 for the molten metal 2 are opened intermittently or continuously and communicate with a metal purifying device. Combustion products from at least one burner 14 flow in countercurrent to the movement of the charge 1 through the furnace. In another embodiment (Fig. 2), the furnace rotates about a vertical axis and the metal layer forms a paraboloid surface. In a further embodiment, (Fig. 3), the furnace includes one or more annular barriers which divide the metal layer partly or wholly into successive portions in the direction of the axis of rotation. Electrical heating elements are inserted into the metal layer portions. Suitable metals are Sn, Pb, Cu, Ag, Au, Al, Fe, Co, Ni, or their alloys. The metal for the lining 2 may be fed into the furnace with the charge 1.
