Abstract
<PICT:1013661/C1/1> Apparatus for charging and melting glass marbles comprises a hopper 2, furnace 11, and an inter-connecting free-flow gravity-feed guide conduit consisting of an upper sloping portion 6 pivoted at 8 to a lower fixed vertical portion 9 and driven at its upper end 5 to oscillate in a vertical plane, preferably through an angle of 13 degrees at 10 cycles/min., to prevent jamming of the marbles. The hopper is provided with an internal weir 3, and the furnace is preferably electrically heated and used in the manufacture of glass filaments 12. These filaments may be fed on to matting to form a chop stand mat. In a modification, a row of feed conduits may lead from a hopper or series of hoppers to a row of furnaces.
