Abstract
<PICT:1093428/C1/1> In forming glass or like fibre, solid particulate glass is fed into a centrifugal spinner directly on to the inner wall of a perforated area and heated to the molten state so that molten glass is forced from the perforations by centrifugal force. As disclosed, a spinner 1 on a horizontal shaft 2 has a disc 3 and perforated rim 4 on to which the glass particles fall from a feed conveyer 5, which may comprise a helical member 6 or a belt and buckle conveyer or vibrating troughs. The glass is melted by a plurality of gas burners 7 as shown or by electric heaters or both. The fibres issuing from the perforations 17 may be attenuated by a blast of superheated steam from orifices 8 in a concentric ring 9, the fibres then being collected on a conveyer 18.
