Abstract
A process for the production of glass filaments comprises projecting small streams of molten glass horizontally, directing a gaseous blast downwardly against the glass streams to thereby attenuate them to form filaments and spraying water on the attenuated filaments at a first zone and liquid binder resin at a second zone below the first. Molten glass (G) is fed through a quill shaft 6 to a centrifuge spinner 5. The glass passes through a perforated distributer 7 <PICT:1114899/C1/1> to the interior of the spinner 5 from whence it is projected horizontally through orifices in the peripheral wall thereof. A downwardly directed gaseous blast from an annular orifice 10 in the floor of a combustion chamber 9 attenuates the horizontally directed glass streams in a downward direction. Nozzles 14, located round a ring 13 positioned adjacent but immediately below the spinner 5 and of a diameter greater than annular orifice 10, spray cooling water W on to the attenuating filaments in a direction transverse to their direction of attenuation. Nozzles 15 on a further ring 16 located below the ring 13 downwardly spray the binder R on to the glass filaments which are then collected as a mat (B) on a conveyer (11). The rings 13, 16 are mounted for vertical adjustment.
