Abstract

550,505. Granulating slag. BJYORKMAN, E. B., and ESCOR INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 10, 1941, No. 8727. [Class 82 (ii)] In the granulation of blast furnace slag to form non-porous substantially glassy particles, a jet of water at high pressure is directed by a nozzle 2 in an upward direction against a stream of molten slag falling from a slag runner 1 whereby the slag is broken up and carried upwardly against the underside of a deflecting plate 3 at a small angle thereto, and the granulated slag is conveyed by a conveyer 9 into a hopper 10 the residual adherent water being allowed to evaporate by the effect of the heat left in the slag. Beneath the conveyer 9 is disposed a perforated plate 13 which allows draining of the slag before the latter reaches the hopper 10, surplus water escaping through an outlet 14. The nozzle 2 is shaped in upward concave form and the water is thrown against the plate at an angle of 10 to 15 degrees to the horizontal. Specification 546,627 is referred to.
