Abstract

546,627. Granulating slag. BJORKMAN, E. B., and ESCOR INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 16, 1941, No. 615. [Class 82 (ii)] Molten slag falling from a slag runner 1 is granulated by being projected against a baffle plate 3 by a stream of water at a pressure of over 401b. per sq. inch from a nozzle 2 shaped in a curve which is concave upwardly. Supplementary nozzles 5, 6 also project water on to the falling slag stream and along the plate 3 at a slight angle thereto. The mixture of slag and water collects in a tank 7, from which the slag may be removed by a scoop 14. In a modification, the slag is conveyed along the plate 3 into the path of rotating vanes which project them into the tank 7 connected at its bottom to a pump which conveys the slag mixture through a pipe on to a vibrating screen, the separated slag falling into a bunker where the water is separated from the slag.
