Abstract

359,405. Granulating slag. ASH CO. (LONDON), Ltd. and SILK, P. B., 63, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. July 15, 1930, No. 21448. [Class 82 (ii).] A stream of molten slag or the like is broken up into pieces of predetermined size by the intermittent action of a high-pressure water jet or jets. The intermittent action may be produced by a motor-driven oscillating pendulum nozzle of the type described in Specification 340,336, [Group XXIX], or by a motor-driven revolving nozzle or nozzles ; the nozzle or nozzles being arranged so that the jet passes from side to side across the molten stream of slag. Two or more pendulum nozzles arranged side by side may be used or a single nozzle may have more than one opening so that a plurality of jets are produced. Molten slag from a spout 1 falls into a chamber 2 where it is subjected to the action of a high-pressure water jet issuing from an arcuate opening 14 in front of an oscillating pendulum type nozzle 11 supplied with water under pressure by a pipe 13 and driven bv an electric motor 10 mounted on a bracket 9 on the wall of the chamber 2, the motor being fitted with a speed regulating device so that the size of the particles of slag cut off by the jet may be controlled. The partially cooled particles of slag fall into an inclined sluiceway 3 fitted with a metallic liner 5 curving upwardly and terminating in the chamber 2. Water at low pressure is supplied to an aperture 16 at the upper end of the liner 5 to effect the final cooling of the slag and to lubricate its passage down the sluiceway. The cooled particles are discharged from the bottom of the sluiceway 3 into a main sluiceway arranged in the same sense as the sluice 3. Specification 358,527 also is referred to.
