Abstract
<PICT:1107115/C6-C7/1> A method of disintegrating metal comprises discharging a stream of condensible vapour under conditions which cause it to mix with a cooling agent so as to induce rapid condensation attended by vigorous agitation and shock phenomena in a limited zone of the stream, discharging a jet of molten metal to contact the zone whereby the molten metal is shattered into particles and collecting the particles in a quenching liquid. Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu and their alloys are powdered in a disintegration tank 14 by impinging saturated steam jets 12, 13 on to a ribbon shaped jet of liquid metal and condensing the steam with air, N2 or water curtains from nozzle 15. Particles are collected in a quenching bath of water at 60 DEG C. at the bottom of the tank, the particles solidifying before reaching the bottom of the bath. Suitable conditions for disintegration are indicated by vibrations in a feeler placed in the steam jet. The jets can impinge at different angles and heights and spray or shower nozzles may be used. N2 may be supplied to the tank to prevent oxidation.
