Abstract

518,541. Granulating slag. HOLLAND & HANNEN & CUBITTS, Ltd., and ASBOTH H. K. V. Aug. 25, 1938, No. 25031. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1937. [Class 82 (ii) ] In a process for obtaining building and insulating materials from furnace slag, the molten slag is led on to the apex of a hollow conical body band runs down over the surface of the body which is provided with channels, which run from the apex to the lower edge and increase in depth toward the said lower edge, in which the slag is subjected to the action of water, steam, air, or other gas issuing through holes h arranged in the bottoms of the channels. The conical body is mounted on bearings f, g, for rotation about a pipe e through which water, steam, or gas is introduced, escaping through orifices in the pipe into the interior of the body b and thence through the holes h in the bottoms of the, channels. The water &c. escaping from the orifices in the pipe e or through nozzles m, impinge on blades d and rotate the body b, which may also be rotated by a driving-device o. The slag foam formed by the action of the water &c. escaping from the holes h on the slag as it runs down over the body is flung off by centrifugal force and granulated by striking a surrounding wall i, the granulated slag passing out through the bottom of the apparatus and being carried away by a water stream, conveyer band, or other device. The channels are formed between ribs n formed on or secured to the surface of the body b.
