Heading C7X In a method of disintegrating metal according to Claim 1 of Specification 1,107,115 (in which condensible vapour is mixed with a cooling agent, so that condensation attended by vigorous agitation and shock phenomena takes place, and molten metal is made to contact the condensing vapour and be disintegrated into particles which are collected in a quenching liquid) a molten metal stream is made to encounter a jet or stream of gas or vapour prior to its contacting the condensing vapour. Molten metal (e.g. stainless steel) may be discharged through outlet 13 from pot 14, and encounter a conically converging steam jet from slot 12 of nozzle 4 before encountering a condensing steam jet from nozzle 5 at y. Nozzle 5 produces a flat jet, and may supply saturated steam or a steamair mixture produced by entrainment of air. Some air may be entrained by a conical steam jet from outlet 13 and cool the interior of the tank in which disintegration takes place, or the atmosphere in the tank, which may be nitrogen or a noble gas, may be cooled by a water spray within the tank. The pressure of the steam supplied to nozzle 4 is less than 1kg/ cm<SP>2</SP>, so that the jet from nozzle 4 does not disturb the action of the jet from nozzle 5.
