Abstract

[Also in Divisions A4 and B3] Meat, fish or fruit flesh is stripped e.g. from bone, part or whole carcases, stones, or pips, as the case may be, by shot blasting using solid particles e.g. of ice, solid carbon dioxide, sodium chloride, which can subsequently be extracted by changing their phase. The flesh may be chilled or frozen and the particles sub-cooled to increase their abrading power and jetted at the flesh in a stream of fluid e.g. air, or liquid such as water. Pieces of meat 1 on a steel mesh conveyer 2 are traversed past nozzles 3 and blasted withsmall sub-cooled ice particles issuing therefrom. Ice particles and shredded flesh are collected in a hopper 4 and passed to a discharge shoot 5. Ice particles in a hopper 6 pass to a cooled chamber 7 fed by a pipe 9 from conduit 8 with compressed air, the main flow of air however passing to a Venturi 10 and drawing ice particles through a pipe 11, leading from the chamber 7, and carrying them to the blasting nozzles 3.
