[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for cooling and crushing cement clinker is constructed for counter-current flow of the material and air, and comprises two or more rotors 6, 7 with impact members 8 arranged to receive the material and convey it through the casing by impact, a space within the casing above the rotors through which cooling air flows being divided into sections 13, 14 by impact members 9-10 which form airpermeable partitions permitting cool air to pass and are struck by material hurled against them by the impact members 8, each section being connected to a suction passage 18, 20 through which dust-laden air may be drawn out of the casing 1, an outlet 15 in the casing permitting removal of material not entrained by the cooling air. As described, the partitions 9, 10 are formed by chains suspended above the rotors and a further similar partition is suspended above an impact plate 12 which receives material struck by the rotor 7 prior to passing out of the machine via the outlet 15. The width of the sections 13, 14 is made variable by providing bars 31, from which the chains are suspended, mounted to slide in slots 32 in the casing. Material falling through a grate 5 or between the rotors 6, 7 is collected for delivery through the outlet 15 by an endless conveyer 24. Dust produced is removed as it is formed through pipes 18, 20, fans 19a, 21a and cyclones 19, 21. The dust from cyclone 21 is fed to cyclone 19 and the dust from the latter is mixed with the material discharged or delivered to a grinding apparatus or storage. The fans are arranged to provide cooling air for the apparatus.
