IULVERI ZING MACHINE.
Application flied October 15, 1921. Serial No. 507,982.
a horizontally positioned twin cylinder case and to pulverize the coal by .a cyclonic action whereby the particles of the material are powdered by impinging one anotherin a se mental openin between the cylinders.
tained by the use of a. case forming two the communicating flanges in the case between the heaters, and a on line Il--II,
,tioned si e by si he objects of t e improvement are atparallel cylindric chambers havin a ngitudinal communicating cylindrica segment opening between the cylinders, each cylinder having a series of heaters rotating in the same irection creating a cyclonic action in openmg. and bafile central inlet hopper at one end of the case and centrifugal impellersdrawlng the pulverized mater '11 from the other end of each cylinder for discharging the same therefrom.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure -1, is a plan section of the machine in the horizontal plane of the axes of the cylinders;
Fig. 2 a 10m itudinal elevation section,
i 1' Fig. 3, a tra i isvirse' section on line III-III, Fig. 2; and
Fi 4 a transverse section on line IV-iV, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The case 1 of the machine is in the form of two elon ated c linders horizontally posicl; with a; longitudinal open ing 2, between them. A removable lining 3 of hardened metal is preferably provided in the case, upon which a series of mwardly projecting annular flanges 4 are formed at spaced intervals forming the annular channels 5 between them, which flanges extend entirely around the inner face of the cylinders, excepting only at the longitudinal opening 2 formed by intercepting segments 0 the cylinders, which is unobstructed.
Axial shafts 6 are mounted in each cylinder by means of bearings 6 at the ends of the case, and upon each shaft is keyed a series of hubs 7 from which project radial beater arms 8, the ends of which extend into the annular channels between the flanges 4.
The face 9 of each beat-erarm is slightly inclined in the direction of its width so as to deflect'the material toward the rear or outlet end of the-cylinder, and thelength of the arms is such that'they pass adjacent to, without striking the arms in the adjoinmg cylinder.
The shafts operate in the same direction by meansof separate motors, so that the adjacent ends of the heaters pass each other in opposite directions on each side of thelongitudinal opening 2, between the cylinders', thereby creating a cyclonic action therein.
Coal orother material to be pulverized is received through a hopper 11 and a central port 12 controlled by anadjnstable gate 13 m the upper part of the forward end ofthe machine; and the material may'be fed into the hopper from a sup ly reservoir 14 by a screw conveyor 15 disc arging upon a con-. veyor belt 16 delivering into the hopper 11, and the'material preferably passes through a magnetic comb 17 for extracting metallic substances therefrom.
The rear end of the case is shaped toform chambers 18 and 18' having centrifugal fans'19 mounted on the shafts 5 therein, and each chamber having a centralannular inlet opening 20 around the shaft in its rear wall and a peripheral outlet opening 21 and 21' communicating with a discharge pipe 22 leading to a consuming furnace or other place of use or storage; there being an axial port 23 in the rear wall of the case for each fan, and an adjustable damper 24 for each port. I
An adjustment of the gate 13 controls the amount of coal 'and air which may enter the forward end ofthe machine and an adjustment of the damper 24 regulates the amount of additional air which may enter the rear side of the fan to mix with the coal dust delivered to a furnace, thereby controlling combustion therein.
In the operation of the machine, the material' to be pulverized is fed through the hopper 11 and the port 12 into the forward end of the machine in the median line there-' of, at the forward end of the longitudinal opening 2 between the cylinders, where it is impinged by the first set of heaters in one or the other cylinder and thrown centrifugally outward thereby into and along the first annular channel whereby it is crushed or. .reduced to a certain extent.
The inclined faces of the heaters urge the material rearward and some of it finds its waythrough the opening inside the flanges 4 into the path of the next set of heaters, wherein p the centrifugal action further crushes and reduces the -material.
.When the material is carried around the cylinder back to the longitudinal opening between the same, the intervening currents caused bythe opposite movement of the heaters on opposite sides of the opening, creates a cyclonic movement ofthe material which is thereby ground upon itself; which centrifugal and cyclonical actions are repeated by the successive sets of heaters until the material reaches the rear end of the machine.
As fast as the material is reduced or pulverized to a fine powder it floats moreprless in the air throughout-the entire cavity of the cylinders, and is subject to the suction created by the centrifugal fans, and is drawn through the inlets thereto at the rear endsof the cylinders, and is discharged through the pipe 22- r Although a considerable portion of the material is crushed'by the action of the heaters and the walls of the cylinders, the greater portion of the pulverizing action is accomplished by the cyclonic action'in the longitudinal segmental opening between the cylinders, thereby saving the heaters and the walls of the cylinder from the greater abrading action to which they will be subject if they'did all the work of reducing the material.
Furthermore the larger particles of the material are thrown into the channels between the fianges 4 and are thereby retarded so that only the smaller-51nd lighter particles move rearward in the machine and'only the finely pulverized or powdered material is drawn and discharged therefrom by action ofthe centrifugal fan. a
It is evident that the heaters in the respective cylinders may be'operated at the same or at different speeds without departing from the spirit of the invention; and it has been found in practice that coal and other like materials need not he previously dried for being pulverized in the improved machine.
I claim:
