Abstract

958,484. Impact pulverizers; centrifugal separators. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. April 25, 1963 [April 27, 1962], No. 16306/63. Headings B2A and B2P. Apparatus for pulverizing and classifying solids comprises a centrifugal impact mill, means for introducing solids to be pulverized together with carrier gas radially of the mill, a closed generally circular cross-section chamber in open communication with the pulverized product delivery side of the mill, the chamber being provided with a centrally disposed port for the withdrawal of fine pulverized solids entrained in carrier gas exiting from the mill and a plurality of gas inlet ports disposed in the peripheral wall of the chamber for introducing additional carrier gas into the chamber thereby to maintain a vortical flow of carrier gas within the chamber for effecting a particle size classification of pulverized solids delivered by the mill and dispersed in the carrier gas. The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprise a mill having an inlet 40 for solids to be pulverized and a rotary disc 45 provided with radial vanes 47 for drawing in air through port 40 as well as through recycling ducts 39, and louvres 55 arranged around the entire circumference, at intervals from 5 to 15 degrees, of a receiver 38 for supplying additional air, preferably between 0À1 and 0.9 sonic velocity, tangentially to a classifier chamber 57, the receiver having air supplied thereto from a duct 34, Fig. 1, by means of a fan 32 and duct 35. The chamber 57 is provided with plates 60, 62 rotatable with the disc 45. The periphery of plate 62 is provided with vanes 64 for ejecting coarse solids from the pulverizer and from the classifier through a trough 65 to the ducts 39. The fine fraction resulting from the classification is concentrated of the vortical flow of the classification air and is withdrawn from chamber 57 by a fan 31 which delivers it to a volute casing 36. A trough for removing coarse solids from the pulverizer may be provided between trough 65 and the anvil face 50 of the pulverizer. Also, the plate 62 may be stationary or the plates 60, 62 may be driven from the shaft of motor 30. Further, one or more of the ducts 39 may be used for feeding solids. In a modification, Fig. 3, the louvres 55 may be replaced by nozzles 77 for supplying steam, at or above sonic velocity, into classification chamber 78, the nozzles being cylindrical or of converging-diverging type and in the latter case dimensions are given. The steam effects additional grinding so that recycling is not necessary. It is stated that the louvres 55 and nozzles 77 may be used in conjunction with each other and that the same mill may be used interchangeably with the classifier of Figs. 1 and 2 or that of Fig. 3.
