Impact pulverizers.-Apparatus for pulverizing or disintegrating rock, cement, concrete, brick, coal, &c. comprises a rotary beater-device in the form of one or move discs carrying laterally projecting bars or blades, a casing affording unobstructed access of the material to be pulverized to the central region of the beater-device and a peripheral escape therefrom, an'd a whirling chamber having a grid portion through which the finer particles escape while the heavier particles are directed into collision with oncoming particles or into a return passage for re-entry into the pulverizer. As shown, the machine comprises two rotary beaters driven at high speed in opposite directions in casings A arranged side by side with their exit passages J directed towards one another and communicating with a common whirling and pulverizing-chamber K. The upper part of the curved wall of the chamber K is formed as a grid L through which the finer particles pass along a passage M to settling-chambers. Each beater-device consists of a pair of discs B separated by spacing-bars C; and each casing has an inlet shoot D located centrally on one face, the adjacent disc B having a corresponding central opening. The heavy particles from the chamber K fall down a return passage N, which has two branches leading into the feed-shoots D. One disc B of each beater-device is secured to a shaft driven by an electric motor or by a belt passing around a pulley. A single beater-device and casing may be used, the stream of material being divided into two parts, which meet in the whirling chamber. Steel balls or pieces of bard material may be introduced with the material to be pulverized.
