Abstract

1,088,499. Impact pulverizers; centrifugal separators. SLICK INDUSTRIAL CO. Feb. 16, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1964], No. 6726/65. Headings B2A and B2P. Comminuting apparatus wherein a gas e.g. air is employed to transport particulate matter comminuted therein comprises a cylindrical grinding chamber 2 bounded at its lower end by a comminuting rotor 10 and terminated at its upper end by a casting 72 having an annular contoured portion 70 in proximity to the vanes 68 of a classifying rotor 40, and a baffle ring 90 interposed between the rotors 10 and 40 and secured to the wall 4 of the chamber 2 by means of baffle members 100, the gas being circulated through the chamber 2 by means of an inlet manifold 6 and an outlet manifold 74 which terminates in an outlet 8 connected to a suction source, and the members 100 serving to effect a change of direction and reduction in velocity of the gas circulating in the chamber 2. The rotor 10 is provided with pins 16. The rotors 10, 40 are independently driven from motors 26, 46 respectively. Material to be comminuted is fed to the rotor 10 by means of a hopper 64 and screw conveyer 62. In a modification, the casting (72) Fig. 3 (not shown), is secured to the wall (4) of the chamber (2) through the interposition of spacer blocks (88) so as to provide a secondary inlet for gas to circulate in the chamber. (2). In another modification, classifying rotor (118) Fig. 6 (not shown), and outlet manifold casting (130) are hinged to the wall (110) of the chamber (2). Spacer washers (201) are positioned between the casting (130) and wall (110) to provide a gas inlet passage (203). Comminuting rotor (116) is provided with apertures (124) to provide a radially outwardly directed flow of gas to prevent accumulation of particulate matter beneath the rotor. A baffle ring (182) is secured to the chamber wall (110) by means of baffle members (188). In a further modification, comminuting, rotor (300) Fig. 7 (not shown), is in the form of a disc (302) having blocks (304) mounted on the periphery thereof. The blocks in association with a breaker liner (306) mounted on the grinding chamber wall (308) effect comminution by both impact and attrition. A shroud ring (310) is mounted on top of the blocks. A baffle ring (314) is supported by baffle members (316) secured to the wall (308). Primary gas is introduced through annular passage (318) intermediate the outlet manifold casting (320) and the wall (308).
