A wood chipper comprises means (24, Fig. 1) for feeding wood to one side of a rotary disc 17 having angularly-spaced knives (19) and angularly-spaced passageway (21) therethrough, an involute housing 22 surrounding said one side of the disc and a circular housing 26 surrounding the other side, angularly-spaced blades 28 on said other side of the disc rotating with a relatively close fit within the circular housing to convey chips to a tangential opening 27, angularly-spaced blades 32 carried by said one side of the disc outwardly of the feed means (24) rotating within the involute housing to circulate air to a circumferential outlet 23 adjacent the tangential outlet, and a discharge conduit 33 communicating with the tangential and circumferential outlets whereby the air discharged from the circumferential outlets aids in conveying the chips from the tangential outlet through the discharge conduit. The disc 17 is mounted on a shaft 11 rotated by a motor 10 and is formed with a flange 18 to which is secured the blades 28 in the circular housing and the blades 32 in the involute housing. In operation, wood is fed to the disc from a feed shoot 24 and is cut into chips by the knives (19) and the chips pass through the passageways (21) into the circular housing 26. The rotation of the discs causes the blades 28 to draw air through an inlet opening 36 and the flow of air assists the kinetic energy acting on the chips to convey the chips to the tangential opening 27 and discharge conduit 33. At the same time, the blades 32 act to draw air through an inlet opening 34 and circulate it through the involute housing 22 to the circumferential opening 23 where it assists in discharging the chips through the conduit 33.
