Abstract

1,119,457. Woodworking. BELOIT CORP. 27 June, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 29539/67. Heading B5L. A wood chipper comprises a rotary disc 14 having angularly-spaced knives 16 and angularly-spaced passageways 17 therethrough, means 32 for feeding wood to one side of the disc for cutting into chips which pass through the passageways, an outer housing 18 surrounding the other side of the disc, an acurate wall section 23 surrounding a portion of the other side of the disc and spaced inwardly of the housing to define a chip-receiving chamber 24 and a plenum chamber 26, angularly-spaced blades 27 carried by the other side of the disc to rotate with close clearance in the chip-receiving chamber, a tangential opening 23 for the chipreceiving chamber and a circumferential opening 34 for the plenum chamber, the arcuate wall section extending from a point adjacent the tangential opening to the point where wood is fed to the disc, and a discharge conduit 36 communicating with the tangential and circumferential openings. The disc 14 is mounted on a shaft 11 driven by a power unit and carries the knives 16 on one side and the blades 27 on the other side. Plates 29 are secured to the blades 27 and carry a plurality of shorter blades 31, the blades 27 and 31 acting to carry the chips which pass through the passageways 17 around the lower portion of the chip-receiving chamber, defined by the arcuate wall 23, the side 19 of the housing 18 and the disc 14, to the tangential opening 33. The upper portion 18a of the housing has an involute shape and the blades, in the upper portion between the opening 33 and arcuate wall 23 act as a blower to force air drawn in through a central opening 22 around the plenum chamber to the circumferential opening 34 where it joins the discharge conduit 36 to assist the discharge of chips from the machine.
