Abstract

699,254. Goaf filling machines. BRITISH JEFFERY-DIAMOND, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1951 [Jan. 12, 1951], No. 949/51. Class 85 [Also in Group II] A combined crushing and stowing machine for use in underground mines comprises a swing hammer 25 which is carried by a rotor so that as the latter is rotated, material passing from a hopper 7 down along a breaker plate 14 is struck by the hammer and impelled through an outlet 8 for stowing purposes. The rotor shaft 21, which is motor-driven, is mounted in a casing comprising upper and lower parts 2, 3 detachably connected together, the lower part 2 being built on a sledge plate 1 to facilitate transport of the machine over the ground. The swing hammer is mounted on a spindle 24 attached eccentrically between discs 23 on the rotor shaft, the discs each projecting partially through an aperture in the adjacent side wall of the casing and having their outer faces enclosed by substantially cylindrical pockets 12 built on the outer sides of the casing. The pockets have outlets 13 and the discs are provided with radial fins 27 which set up draughts of air which blow through the pocket outlets into the outlet 8 The discs 23 are provided with balance weights 26 each having a flat surface 26a which projects radially from the disc and acts to eject from the pocket material which may have accumulated therein. The breaker plate comprises renewable bars 16 held against a stop 15 by adjustable screw means 18. A water spray system comprising a series of pipes 36 has two jets 38 for spraying the material as it is fed into the casing, and two jets 39 which allow a small amount of water to drip on to the rotor discs 23 so as to wash out the pockets 12. Further water sprays are projected on to the material, whilst it is being contacted by the hammer, through apertures 41 in the rotor shaft. A hinged flap 28 prevents material from flying back through the hopper inlet during the operation of the machine. The outlet 8 is covered by a hinged flap 8a when the machine is not in operation. The machine, except for the inlet and the outlet, is enclosed by a removable cover formed in five parts 56a ... 56e and arranged to seat on the sledge plate.
