Abstract

1,095,738. Impact pulverizers; continuous mixing appliances. C. F. BUTZ ENGINEERING. Dec. 21, 1964 [Dec. 26, 1963], No. 51940/ 64. Headings B1C and B2A. A mill 20, Fig. 1, comprises a housing 22 with an exhaust flue 30 and a power-driven rotor 64, Fig. 4, mounted in the housing adjacent an intake port 44 for the material to be reduced and carrying means 84 to reduce the material, arranged so that in operation the rotor generates a flow of air to impel the reduced material in the direction of the exhaust flue and creates a low pressure at the intake port to accelerate feed of material. As described, the rotor comprises a circular disc 74 formed with ribs 76 on its rear surface 77 and ribs 82 on its front surface 80, each of the ribs including grinding means 84 which comprise arms 86. The arms 86 on each rib are spaced and include openings 88 for a hinge pin 90 on which are pivoted hammer elements 98, comprising hard-faced reversible hammer plates 100, spaced along the pin axis by collars 114. The hammers on each rib are staggered, and vary in number according to the nature of the material to be reduced. A screen 146, Fig. 2, is bolted concentrically within the casing and includes an opening 160 to a trap 166. In operation, a bale of hay 48, Fig. 1, is fed along a conveyor 172 to the opening 44 where the partial vacuum sucks it against projections 134, Fig. 4, which break up the bale and throw it against points 130 on a rotatable plate 118. The broken hay is further reduced by the pivoted hammer plates 100. Mixing may be effected by adding ingredients via an opening 56, Fig. 1, and the vacuum created at the opening 44 may be adjusted by a damper 54. Tramp material is knocked by the pivoted hammer plates around and out through the opening 160, Fig. 2, in the sizing screen 146 into the trap 166. After milling, the tramp material may be removed byopening a cover 164. A hose 58 may be attached to the opening 56 to sweep up material which has spilled around the mill.
