Abstract

1,208,458. Granulating by cutting. JOHANSSONS CHUCKFABRIK A.B. 23 Nov., 1967, No. 53443/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F1] A continuous stream of hot plastics melt is downwardly delivered, from an extruder or calender, to the inlet of a cutting device wherein the melt is granulated by the cutting action of rotary knives 14 against abutments 15 which are arranged parallel to a shaft 13 along which the knives 14 are mounted, with the cutting edges thereof arranged at an inclination to the shaft axis, whereby a scissors like cutting action is obtained. The knives 14 are provided with setting means 17 and are mounted to plates 16 to form an open structure whereby they act as fan blades to cool the plastics, supplementary air cooling being provided from a perforated air delivery pipe 18 around the inlet opening. The granules are pneumatically transported to a cyclone, the conveying air being drawn by a fan through the inlet to further supplement the cooling action.
