Abstract

1304768 Working plastics material T G HUTT 5 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 52768/70 Heading B1C An apparatus for making a master-batch material used in the preparation of material for synthetic plastics film comprises a mixer 14 having mixing or conveying vanes 48 in regions A, C and D the outer end of which have a small clearance with the bevel 34 and trail their roots so that the material passes over the vanes with shearing action. The vanes in zones A and D may be arranged on a helix with an angle of 15‹, each being three-quarters of a revolution behind the one upstream of it when the shaft rotates anti-clockwise in the view of Fig. 2. Zone B has beating vanes with no conveying action, and there are backwardly conveying vanes in Zone C. The barrel 34 is heated and its bearings are cooled by means 56 and by internal cooling of the shaft 42. The mixer is fed by a screw press 12 which has a cooling jacket 30, the remainder of the press and optionally the wall 32 being heated. Any water in the blend is driven off and chamber 16 is under reduced pressure; the vanes 44 may also have a cover 46 to intercept and draw off moisture. The mixture is discharged through an adjustable orifice 50 as a ribbon on to a belt 54 which may be driven faster than the rate of extrusion of the ribbon to them and cool the latter.
