Abstract
A process for shredding plastics and elastomers to a particle size such as to pass through the 297 micron mesh screen, which comprises the steps of: (1) cooling the material to be ground by countercurrent heat exchange with a cryogen refrigerant; (2) feeding the chilled material to a rotary impact mill through valvular means immediately upstream of said impact mill, substantially preventing said valvular means from passing refrigerant vapor and atmospheric air therethrough; (3) introducing a cryogenic refrigerant into said impact mill in sufficient quantities to keep said cooled material in a weakened state; (4) spraying said cooled material into said impact mill while continuously discharging particles of milled and vaporized cryogenic refrigerant from said mill through sieve means located in the discharge port of said mill; and (5) separating said particles of ground material from said vaporized refrigerant and collecting the separated particles.
