Abstract

<PICT:0954615/C1/1> A porous glass is made from perlite ore by gradually increasing the temperature of the ore to the expansion temperature, expanding the ore and thereafter gradually decreasing the temperature to ambient, the treatment being affected under quiescent air conditions, as by heating the perlite ore indirectly. An electric furnace is used and may be either horizontal or vertical. The ore is fed by a vibratory feeder 2 to a hopper 4 leading to an electrically heated kiln 6 containing a stainless steel tube 8 vibrated by mechanism 9 to feed the ore through the kiln 6 to be received in a container 12. A thermocouple 10 is positioned in the hottest part of the kiln 6 for controlling the three zones of heat in the tube 8, i.e. preheat, expanding and annealing temperatures.
