Abstract

856,364. Cellular glass. SCHILL, F., and KONAREK, F. May 5, 1958 [May 28, 1957], No. 14262/58. Class 56. Cellular glass is produced by heating a mixture of pulverized glass and a foaming or gassing agent in heat resisting moulds to a temperature between 500 and 750‹C. to sinter the mixture, further heating to between 800 and 850‹C. to foam the mixture, cooling quickly to between 400 and 500‹C. to solidify the surface of the cellular block to prevent its shrinkage and finally tempering at between 620 and 660‹C. to stabilize the block. The process may be carried out within a tunnel furnace comprising three directly adjoining zones. namely, a frothing zone 1, a cooling zone 2, and a stabilization zone 3, the moulds 9 containing the frothing mixture passing continuously on roller track 13 through said zones. The frothing and stabilization zones are heated so as to keep the covers of the moulds always 10 to 30‹C. cooler than the bottoms of the moulds, while the cooling zone is not heated. Zones 1 and 3 consist of fireclay bricks 4, insulated at the outside by bricks 5, providing with suitable heating devices 14, 15, e.g. gas or oil burners, or electric heaters, the cooling zone 2 being made of a sheet metal casing 6, without a heating device, provided at the top, sides, and if required, at the bottom, with ventilation flaps 7. The cooling zones is separated from the frothing and stabilization zones by fireclay gates 8 reaching closely to the covers of the moulds.
