Abstract
422,642. Vehicle bodies. SHORT BROS. (ROCHESTER & BEDFORD), Ltd., and KEMP, W. P., Seaplane Works, Rochester, Kent. Oct. 28, 1933, No. 29987. [Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i)] In metal bodies of vehicles of the kind comprising uprights connected by longitudinal and lateral members, the pillars are of cruciform cross-section. The pillars a are of cruciform cross-section having the web a<5> of increased length. The pillars are connected by longitudinal cant rails b, vent rails c, waist rails e, seat rails h " bottom side " rails i and skirt rails l and also transversely by floor rails j and upper deck bows o. The cant rails are of angle or Z-section and are connected to the pillars by cutting away part of the web a<2> of the pillar a and the cant rails are braced to the vent rails c as described in Specification 422,698, the rails c being connected to the uprights a by upturned portions fitting against the webs a2. The waist rails comprise two spaced metal portions e<1>, e<2> connected at the top by channels e<3>, e<4>, e<5> and at the bottom by returned flanges e<6>, e<7>. These waist rails are connected to the pillars by angles e<10> and are provided with flanged apertures e<8>, e<9>. The seat rail h is of T-section and is connected to the web a<5> of the pillar a by turned-back portions of the web h<1>. The " bottom-side " rails i are of channel section and rest on the floor boards to which they are bolted. The skirt rail l is of angle section. The transverse floor joists comprise two channel members j<1>, j<2> placed back to back with an intervening hardwood member j<3>. The joists are bolted to the uprights with the aid of flitch plates j<4>. The pillars at the corners and at the centre of the front bulkhead are arranged in pairs in positions and interconnected as indicated in Fig. 9 by plates s ... s<3>. The outer panelling f is secured to wood &c. fillets a<6>, e<13> carried respectively by the pillars a and the waist rail e, the lining k being secured by angles m<1>, m<2> to the pillars and through wood &c. fillets e<11> to the waist rail. Above the waist rail the pillars are enclosed by sheet metal n which is bent so as to form with a capping n<4> window seatings, similar seatings being formed in the waist rail by a metal sheet f<2> and a capping e<12>.
