Abstract
422,579. Speed governors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Caughey, R. J. ; 910, Livingston Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) July 31, 1933, No. 21493. Convention date, July 29, 1932. [Class 57] A speed governor 10 controls the regulating valve 7 of the prime mover through a fluid relay 12. A control valve 51 is connected to the control valve 30 so that during normal running its face 49 just uncovers a port 53 leading to a spring loaded piston 44 allowing pressure fluid to enter the cylinder and maintain the piston 44 in its lower position. Upon an excessive rise in speeds the control valve 30 is lowered and upon a certain predetermined movement being exceeded, the face 49 uncovers the port 53 allowing exhaust to port 56 with a consequent rising of the piston 44. Connected to the piston 44 is a double valve 41 which when in the lower position allows fluid to flow from pipe 39 to pipe 43 and cylinder 36 maintaining in its lower position a spring- loaded piston 35 also connected to the regulating valve 7. The rising of the piston 44 tends to seat the upper part of the valve 41 and also open the pipe 43 to exhaust and allow the piston 35 to rise and accelerate the closing of the valve 7, the acceleration depending upon the amount of opening of the port 53. In an alternative construction the governor actuates the control valve of the fluid relay through an auxiliary fluid relay. The main fluid relay is supplied by two pumps, one of which is brought into action by a valve actuated by the piston 44 to increase the fluid pressure and accelerate the movement of the power piston to close the valve 7. In a further construction the power piston of the main fluid relay is of a differential type and the piston 44 actuates a valve to release the pressure on the larger area and accelerate the movement.
