Regulating.-A hydraulic turbine C is provided with speed-governor mechanism controlling the gate supply of water and a liquid friction brake comprising a stationary member 41 and a movable member 42 secured to, or driven by, the turbine shaft, both members having a series of pockets formed by inclined partitions 43. By varying the pressure of the water supplied to the pockets, the braking effects on the turbine may be regulated. The water may be taken from the turbine casing D by a pipe 44 leading to an annular passage 45 and ports 46. The pipe 44 is controlled by a. valve 47 which is actuated by a handcontrolled electric motor 53, and is by-passed by a pipe 54 containing a valve 55 actuated by the piston 56 of a relay controlled by a slide-valve 63, Fig. 5, held by a latch 68, which is tripped by a centrifugally-operated member 73 when the turbine reaches an excessive speed, so as to move the slide-valve 63 into position for opening the valve 55 to admit a full supply of water to the brake. The valve 55 may also be controlled by a speed governor 75, which is set to apply the liquid brake at a speed lower than that for which the trip device is set. The hand-controlled valve 47 is left partly open at normal operation, securing a slight braking action.
