Abstract

146,065. Woodtli, A. March 11, 1920. Stop-gear.-In a governing and stopping mechanism for steam turbines &c. the stop-valve 1 is arranged to be closed by pressure liquid controlled by a spring-actuated valve 20, which is normally depressed by a latch 28 to allow the liquid to flow from the supply pipe 21 through a pipe 26 to the pistons 9 connected to the ordinary control valves 2. At a certain speed an emergency governor 34 moves a lever 32 to trip the latch. The pipe 26 is then cut off and the liquid flows through a pipe 25 to a piston connected to a revolvable member 5 provided with vertical slots. When the slots are in register with projections on a member 6 on the valve rod 7 the spring 8 closes the valve 1. The valve 1 may be closed also by means of a hand-wheel 17. The valve 20 is re-set by hand. To hasten the stopping of the engine the pressure liquid in the pipe 25 may actuate a spring piston and open a valve in the condenser, thereby breaking the vacuum.
