Abstract

832,648. Turbines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 25, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956], No. 30074/57. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] In a re-heat-type steam turbine power plant 1, 2 having an emergency speed control system 8, 8a, 8b, controlling main and re-heat stop valves 1b and 10 respectively, and a preemergency speed control system 12-15 controlling the intercept valve 9, the latter system has a control arrangement which does not effect operation of the intercept valve by the pre-emergency system during intercept valve movements below a preselected rate corresponding to a preselected rate of turbine acceleration, but which rapidly closes the intercept valve for accelerations above the preselected rate. Water from condenser 4 is pumped at 5 to a primary boiler 6a and steam passes the main stop valve 1b and a main control valve 1a controlled by governor 7 to a high pressure turbine 1. The steam then passes to a re-heat boiler 6b, the re-heat stop valve 10 and the intercept valve 9 to a low pressure turbine 2 connected to the condenser. Should the speed increase slowly to 101% of rated speed, a governor 11 moves piston valve 24 downward to shut-off oil pressure at 17 and open drain port 18 so that spring 23 moves piston 21, piston valve 15a and dashpot piston 13b downward, the latter moving at a speed below the maximum permitted by the dashpot needle valve 13j, so that piston valve 14a abuts stop 14h and oil acts on piston 14d to keep a drain valve 14g closed. Downward movement of valve 15a releases oil pressure from piston 15c so that it closes the intercept valve 9 at a 105% of rated speed. Should the turbine accelerate at a rate greater than the permitted rate of descent of the dashpot piston, downward movement of piston 21 rocks lever 30 about fulcrum 30b on the dashpot piston and lifts valve 14a to drain oil from piston 14d and open drain valve 14g whereby piston 15c quickly closes the intercept valve 9. If the speed exceeds about 110%, the emergency speed governor 8 trips and closes valves 8a, 8b, 1b and 10 to shut down the turbine.
