399,682. Speed governors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Standerwick, R. G. ; 17, Brookhouse Drive, Marblehead, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Dec. 23, 1932, No. 36478. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1931. [Class 57.] A speed governor 29 actuates through the fluid relay 28 the pilot valve 19 of a fluid relay 12 actuating the throttle valve 2 of a turbine 1. Movement of the valve 2 is transmitted through links 58, 57 to a pilot valve 52 which causes a piston 46 to operate to alter the position of the fulcrum 23 to counteract the movement caused by the speed governor so that the valve 2 returns to its original position, i.e. the load output of the turbine returns to substantially its original value. The faces 63 of the pilot valve 52 are shaped to retard the flow of pressure fluid causing the alteration of the fulcrum 23 to be delayed. Stops 64, 65 are provided to limit the movement of the fulcrum so that outside this range the speed governor acts upon the valve 2 in the normal manner. The system may be applied to the machines carrying the base load in a power plant so that for small changes in speed the plant returns to its normal load output and the variation in load on the plant is taken by the peak load machines.
