[Class 135.] In a valve for locomotive regulating valves &c. comprising a main valve 5 formed integrally with a piston 6, an auxiliary valve 12 operated by a spindle 13, and a pressure chamber 8 communicating with the fluid inlet 10 by means of apertures 9 and with the fluid outlet by means of a passage 11 controlled by the auxiliary valve, throttling devices are arranged between the inlet 10 and the main valve seat 2 and in the passage 11. The former throttling device consists of a narrow annular gap 15 formed between the valve 5 and a lower casing member 3. The latter throttling device consists of a substantially conical member 14 secured to the valve 12. When the auxiliary valve 12 is closed, the fluid pressure on the piston 6 is insufficient to open the main valve, but with the valve 12 open, fluid leaves the chamber 8 at a greater rate than it enters and the fluid pressure under the piston 6 and the main valve 5 is sufficient to raise the latter. Due to the throttling by the passage 15, the pressure below the valve 5 is not so great as to cause the main valve to strike the auxiliary valve. Any acceleration of the valve 5 relative to the valve 12 causes the member 14 to throttle the passage 11 so that pressure is built up in the chamber 8 and the acceleration of the valve 5 is checked. Thus the valves 5, 12 tend to move at the same speed. Throttling is produced by heart-shaped apertures 16 when the valve 5 is raised above the member 3, the apices of which apertures are directed downwardly. A collar 17 limits the travel of the valve 12 and enables valve 5 finally to be lifted clear of the fluid passage.
