Abstract
Tools or machine parts used in hot working are manufactured from iron alloys containing, beside iron and elements commonly found in iron alloys, viz. silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulphur, 10-35 per cent of tungsten, 0,1-0,4 per cent of carbon and at least one of the elements titanium, vanadium, tantalum, zirconium, uranium, hafnium and thorium in an amount of not more than 10 per cent, the alloys being capable of precipitation hardening; the tungsten may be replaced wholly or in part by molybdenum. The alloys are rapidly cooled from a temperature above 950 DEG C., and subsequently reheated to a temperature between 400 and 850 DEG C. In an example, an alloy containing 0,15 per cent of carbon, 0,05 per cent of silicon, 0,24 per cent of manganese, 30,6 per cent of tungsten, and 0,15 per cent of vanadium is quenched in water from 1200 DEG C. and then reheated to 750 DEG C.
