[Class 64 (i)] In water heaters having a tank 1 and an inner vessel 5 open at the top and closed at the bottom and containing the heating means 7 arranged so that water therein does not mix with water in the tank, a cowl or cap 8 is spaced from the inner vessel and disposed above the top thereof and has sides extending down to or below the level of the upper edge of the vessel 5 ; the water inlet 3 is outside the inner vessel 5, and an inverted U-tubo 9 or the like provides an open connection between the space below the top of the vessel 5 and the tank space above this top, so that air is trapped in the cowl. An open tube 11 in the cowl 8 projects into the vessel 5 and is covered by a cap 10 with its sides extending down to above the top of the vessel 5 or the air trap may be formed by a recess 12 in the top of the cowl 8 depending into the vessel and apertured at 13 to receive water. An open tube 14 may extend through the aperture 13 into the vessel 5 and the water level is maintained in the tank below the level of the top of the tube. The cowl may be supported by extensions on the vessel 5 or as in Fig. 4 the sides of the vessel extend to the top of the cowl side portions 15 being bent in and a band 16 attached to form the lower edge of the cowl.
