Abstract
851,471. Gravity-separation apparatus. RYEARC Ltd. Feb. 15, 1957 [Nov. 15, 1955], No. 32683/55. Class 46. Water contaminated with oil enters at 11, Fig. 1, rises within a partition 20, 21, and flows downwards between cones 22 and 24, thereafter rising within cone 22 to the upper region of an outer container 10. Oil collecting in the space around cone 22 passes upwardly through holes 62 in the cone and, together with oil in the main body of the mixture, collects in the upper region of the container. The water passes downwardly, outside partition 21, and then either through an opening 27, Fig. 2, in a horizontal annular baffle 26 into the bottom of the container, or through a lateral port 31, Fig. 1, into a lateral enlargement 30 of the container and thence through a further port 31a into the bottom of the container. Oil separating beneath the baffle 26 rises through three tubes 60, Figs. 1 and 2, to the top of the container. The water passes to an outlet 18, Fig. 5, between a baffle 36, Fig. 1, extending downwards from one edge of the port 27 and a baffle 34, Fig. 2, extending downwards from an intermediate position. The top of the space between baffles 34, 36, is closed by a sloping cover plate 37. The oil passes into the inlet slot 17, Fig. 2, of a pipe 14, Fig. 1, leading to an outlet 12, Fig. 5. Egress of oil and water is controlled by valves 40 and 41 respectively, linked together (42, 44, 43) so that when one is open the other is closed, and vice versa, the linkage being attached by a further link 53 to a pivot on an arm 52 secured to a spindle 49, Fig. 2, to which are also secured arms 48 carrying a float 46, Fig. 1, and arms 55 carrying counterweights 56. The float normally floats on the oil-water interface and controls the degree of opening of the valves, effecting increase of oilvalve opening with increase of oil proportion in the mixture. A radial baffle 32, Fig. 2, extends upwards from the horizontal baffle 26 at the edge of the opening 27 and at the top of the baffle 32 there extends a horizontal baffle 33 through an arc of 90 degrees. There may be a perforated plate between parts 20, 21 at their junction. Steam heating coils 63 are provided.
