Abstract

293,091. Maclean, J. B. March 26, 1927. Ball and float valves.-In traps or separators for immiscible liquids of different densities, such as employed for separating oil from sea or fresh water, a double heat discharge valve is arranged in a convenient position in communication with the separating chamber, the valve stem entering freely into the chamber and being associated with a lever and float located therein. The float is lifted by the heavier liquid to close the valve when its level rises as the lighter liquid passes out of the chamber. The valve casing 3 is conveniently arranged on the top plate of the separating tank &c. 1, the outlet 5 being regulated by a double heat valve 8, 8<a>, rendered accessible by a cover 4. In Fig. 1, the valve stem 9 slides in a guide 11 in a bracket 12 to which is pivoted the float lever 14 arranged to give great mechanical advantage. The lever is formed with a loop 16 to carry the float 17, the action of which may be regulated by an adjustable weight 19. In Fig. 3, the part 23 forms the guide for the valve stem, and a member 22 secured thereto carries the float lever 20, an extension 29 of which moves between guides 30 when employed on ships. Detachable covers 26, 27 enable sheet metal clippings &c. to be put in the float to regulate the weight thereof.
