Abstract

518,346. Dispensing liquids. BYWATER, D. " Sept. 14, 1938, No. 26839. [Class 102 (ii)] Apparatus for dispensing liquids, of the type in which the liquid is displaced by another non- miscible liquid of a different specific gravity, particularly applicable for dispensing petrol by means of water, comprises a tank 11 having an inflow and discharge opening 12 for the lighter liquid at or near the top of the tank, and an inflow and discharge opening 13 for the heavier liquid at or near the bottom of the tank, the discharge openings being provided with valves which include elements 17, 17a which will float on the heavier liquid but will sink in the lighter liquid. The elements 17, 17a may be in the form of hollow spheres, the upper one 17 being lighter than the lower one 17a. Each valve comprises a casing 14 and a hood 16. The casing is fitted with a seating 15 of thick cork or other material, and such seating may be mounted on 'helical or other springs. The hood 16 is formed with one or more main openings 18 adjacent the seating 15 and a small permanent opening 19 covered by a baffle 19a. The openings 18 may be adjusted by an externally operated encircling sleeve. Means for preventing the upper valve becoming inoperative should the hollow sphere leak, are described and illustrated in the Specification. Either pair of inflow and discharge openings may be formed from two separate parts.
