Abstract

637,399. Gravity-separation apparatus. NEWMAN, R. H., and HIRSHSTEIN, M. P. Aug. 21, 1947, No. 23201. Convention date March 24, 1939. [Class 111]. A waste water, grease, oil, and fats separator comprising a continuous flow container 10, Fig. 3, having a waste water outlet 12 communicating with a region 17 at the bottom of the container and disposed above the bottom to determine the inital normal waste water level 22, is provided with a grease, oil, and fats draw-off mechanism comprising a valvecontrolled draw-off port 35, Fig. 4, disposed slightly above the normal water level 22 and operated by a float-type valve mechanism serving to open the port only after an accumulation of grease, &c., within the container has lowered substantially the waste water level therein. As shown the draw-off port is formed by the horizontal open end of a stand-pipe 24 communicating with an outlet 26 from which the greasy materials flow to a tank 27, and the stand-pipe 24 forms a support for the bracket 30 of the valve mechanism, means being provided to adjust the position of the bracket on the stand-pipe. The valve-mechanism comprises a valve member 37 having a tapered surface co-operating with a similar surface on the valve seat 35, the stem 37a of the valve member being connected by levers 39, 40, fulcrummed on the bracket 30, to a member 38 adjusted to float on the surface of the waste water, the buoyancy of the float being adjustable through the screwed plug 43. A shield 45 adjustably mounted on a sleeve 46 carried by the stand-pipe 24 prevents the access of solid matter to the valve 35, 37, the shield 45 and sleeve 46 being suitably apertured to permit the flow of liquids. The outlet 12 is formed on a riser 18 extending vertically from the basin outlet passage 17 and a cover 19 may be provided together with a passageway 20 extending from the uppermost part of the inside of the basin downwardly to open into the riser 18 below the normal water level 22. Baffles 13, 14 may be provided to decrease the velocity of inflow and to create turbulence. On flushing waste liquids into the basin the liquid level therein rises above the normal level 22 so that the float keeps the valve 35, 37 closed. When flushing ceases the liquids become quiescent and the greases &c. which have separated out from the waste water depress the waste water level in the basin until the float 38 falls sufficiently to open the valve 35, 37 whereupon the grease &c. flows off through the stand-pipe 24.
