Abstract

Air traps.-A float-actuated vent valve particularly applicable for use in connection with the flushing tanks for closets provided on railway vehicles has a rubber valve member with a convex contacting surface mounted on top of a vertically movable float and is guided to have a limited descent. The float o is formed in two halves soldered or brazed together and is strengthened internally by end plates o<1> and a central tube o<2>. The guide rod l which passes through the valve member and float where it is secured by a split pin p works through a perforated boss j formed on or secured to the cover g and has a flange m to limit the fall of the float. The casing a is only slightly larger in diameter than the float and is fitted at the bottom with a perforated baffle plate e. In a modification the plate e is replaced by a coned plate adapted to direct the water on to the bottom of the float. In one application the device is applied to a closed flushing tank permanently open to the supply and having an outlet to the closet pan controlled by a flushing valve of the kind maintained in its open position until the rush of water ceases.
