Abstract

421,384. Sliding latches. WARD, A. J., 65, Rugby Road, Kingsbury, and GHEURY DE BRAY, M. E. J., 40, Westmount Road, Eltham, both in London. June 19, 1934, No. 18109. [Class 44] A latch bolt 2 is adapted to be withdrawn against a spring 3 by a spindle 10 cut away so as to leave a segment 14 to co-operate with a projection 7 on the bolt. The spindle is provided with an eccentric locking element 19 which co-operates with a notch 8 in the bolt, Fig. 5<a>, to prevent rotation of the spindle and therefore withdrawal of the bolt. The locking element 19 may be of semicircular cross-section and form part of a rod 18 mounted eccentrically in the spindle and adapted to be turned clockwise through 90‹ to free the spindle by a cylindrical key having projections on its end which engage with recesses 23 in the rod, the rod being held in either position by a spring engaging flats thereon. Alternatively, Fig. 7, the locking clement 19 may comprise a segment of a rod 18 mounted axially in the spindle 10 and held in its locking and unlocking positions by a spring-pressed ball 22<11> engaging recesses in the spindle. The latch is held withdrawn by the segment 14 engaging with a lip 9 on the projection 7, Fig. 10<c>. The latch casing may be of circular or rectangular cross-section and guides 5 may be provided on the fore-end plate 4. The keyway may be provided with one or more spring pins to co-operate with notches in the key and the handle 11 may be riveted to or integral with the spindle 10.
