Abstract

192,258. Hjort, J. E. Dec. 22, 1921. Locks, cases for; night-latches; latches, sliding; reversible locks and latches.-A tubular mortice lock or latch is formed with a casing flattened on two opposite faces so that the otherwise cylindrical casing has two parallel flat surfaces 33 forming direct guides for the movable lock parts. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the latch bolt 5, guided between the flat faces and by projections 7, 7<1> engaging slots 8, 8', may be withdrawn by the follower 10 on the boss 9 mounted on the handle spindle 29, or by the tongue 15 on the barrel 13 of a pin-tumbler lock. A partition 12 forms an abutment for the latch spring 11 and also forms a stop for the follower 10. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the latch bolt 5, similarly guided, is operable by a handle only. The boss 9, operated by the handle 34, has a follower 10 for withdrawing the latch by engaging a slot therein, and an additional arm 32 engaged by a spiral spring 31 for keeping the handle in its inoperative position. The casing 3 fits into a cylindrical hole drilled in the door and its two halves are secured by rivets or screws. Slots 108, 108<1> corresponding to slots 8, 8<1> are cut in the lower part of the casing to allow reversal of the casing for use with a lefthand latch.
