[Class 44] A lock or latch having a sliding latch bolt and a key-operated member adapted to be moved in one direction to effect the locking of the latch bolt in its shot position and to be moved in the opposite direction to effect the retraction of the bolt has the key-operated mechanism arranged to one side of the latch bolt with the key positioned between them and a projecting arm on the key-operated member co-operates with the latch bolt to retract it. A spring-pressed sliding latch 2 has a sloped shoulder 8 adapted to be engaged by a bent up lug 11 on a pivoted lever 9. This lever has a second lug 12 engaged by a hole 13 in a plate 14 slotted at 16 to slide upon a fixed pin 17 when a notch 18 in the lower edge of the plate is engaged by a key 19. A locking lever 15 pivoted on the pin 17 has a flange engaged by the key and has a projection 21 which engages the lug 12 in both the locked and unlocked positions of the lever 9. When the sliding plate 14 is moved to unlock the latch a further movement of the key in the unlocking direction causes the key to engage a projection 28 on the plate 14, and a projection 24 on the plate engages a lug 25 on a lever 26 to effect retraction of the bolt. The latch bolt may have a double bevelled nose. The latch may be manually retracted by a push button acting through levers 33, 35, 29.
