Abstract
418,828. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and ESPLEY, D. C., c/o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. May 1, 1933, Nos. 12648 and 35245. [Class 39 (i).] In a gas-filled tube, such as a triode, tetrode or pentode, the difference between the potentials on the grid necessary for starting and stopping the discharge is reduced by applying to the tube a magnetic field having a component perpendicular to the cathode to anode electron path. In one form an anode 4 surrounds a grid 3 and an indirectly-heated cathode 2 in a tube 1 having a filling of mercury vapour, and a solenoid 5 surrounding the tube produces a magnetic field parallel to the cathode 2. A permanent magnet may replace the solenoid 5, and either means for producing the field may be arranged inside the envelope. The magnetic field is preferably arranged so that the difference between the starting and stopping potentials is a minimum. The tube may be used in circuits, such as that described in Specification 389,917, which generate a square wave form. A suitable tube for use according to the invention is one in which the anode is of copper or other non-magnetic material and forms part of the envelope. Characteristic curves are given for a tube with and without a magnetic field.
