[Classes 35 and 38 (iv).] The primary variator winding of a metadyne transformer is excited by a mechanically coupled auxiliary machine and an opposing battery and the excitation of the transformer is adjustable to regulate the battery current. In the form shown, the winding RVW which produces a flux in the direction of the axis of the primary brushes a, c is excited by the difference in voltage of the dynamo MD which is opposed by the battery B and the machine RM. The auxiliary machines are coupled to the transformer MT, the dynamo MD may have a winding F<1> separately excited at constant voltage whilst the machine RM may motor or generate and charge the battery. In a modified arrangement the machine MD may be omitted and a separately excited additional winding provided on the transformer stator, the amount and direction of current supplied to which winding, when used in addition to the winding connected to the machine RM, is variable to adjust the battery current. When using the transformer to supply motors, switch gear may be provided to enable the battery to be used as an alternative source of supply. Specification 417,517 is referred to.
