[Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i).] In a brick or block for use in the construction of cavity walls and having two or more deep frogs the edges 4 around the frogged face are chamfered inwardly and rounded off at the point adapted to contact with an adjacent brick. In building a cavity wall, Fig. 2, two blocks 1<a>, 1<b> are arranged with their frogged faces together, so that the blocks make contact only through the thin edge formed by the chamfering and rounding. The block shown has three frogs 2 separated by strengthening webs 3. The blocks may be formed with gaps in the chamfered edges to provide horizontal and vertical passages for the circulation of air. Blocks of breeze aggregate, if used inside the wall, facilitate the fixing of joinery. The bricks or blocks may be formed from brick earth in an ordinary pressed-brick machine, or from cement-concrete in moulds provided with raised pallets for forming the frogs and chamfered edges. The blocks may be made in various sizes, and may be combined in different ways to form cavity walls ; for example, a wall having two series of cavities is produced by adding further blocks in rear of the wall shown in Fig. 2; the blocks may be used as a backing to ordinary facing bricks ; or a nine-inch lower storey wall may be formed of three series of blocks and a six inch upper storey wall from two series, leaving a ledge for supporting floor joists. Impervious material may be arranged in the bonding material 5 of the wall above the contacting edges of adjacent blocks.
