Abstract
417,404. Measuring heat quantities. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., 24, Buckingham Gate, and KOCH, E. A. J., 64, Victoria Street, both in London. June 1, 1933, No. 15910. [Class 97 (iii).] The difference in temperature between the supply and return of a circuit through which a heat conveying medium is flowing is maintained constant by effecting heat transference from the supply to the return under the dual control of the temperature of the supply and of the return and the heat consumed or produced is indicated by measuring the total flow of the medium. The transference of heat may be effected by byepassing a part of the medium directly from the supply to the return or by passing the return and part of the supply through a heat exchanger. In the Figure, 6 is the supply, 13 the return, 7 a pipe leading to, and 9 a pipe leading from a heat consumer, and 10, 12 a byepass including a valve 11 controlled by oppositely acting bellows 17, 18 communicating with expansion thermometers 16, 19 in the return 13 and supply 6 respectively. The rate at which heat is supplied or the amount consumed may be measured by a suitable meter in the return pipe 13. In a modification in which the temperature of the supply 6 is maintained constant, the valve 11 may be controlled from the temperature of the return 13 alone. In a further modification the supply pipe contains a shunt including a heat-exchanger through which the return medium flows and abstracts heat. The proportion of the supply flowing through the shunt is determined by a valve controlled similarly to the valve 11.
